Day 1: Arrival to Kigali and Transfer to Gisenyi

This tour will start with pick up from Kigali International Airport or your Kigali hotel by a Kagera safari representative.  You will set off from Kigali to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu for overnight. On arrival at the lodge you will check in and take your well-deserved rest in preparation for the hiking.

Day 2: Transfer from the Grande Barriere to Nyiragongo

On this day you start your journey to Nyiragongo volcano hike. In the morning by 7:00  am you will be at the Grande Barriere border crossing where you check in with Virunga tourism office by 8:00am of the scheduled trek. The tourism office is located at the Grande Barriere border post building just opposite passport control. During check in you will be provided with a volcano trek permit and transfer to  the starting point of the hike.

On arrival at Kibata ranger post, you will start the hike up Nyiragongo at around 10:00am. The hike takes about 6 hours depending on your speed and fitness. You may hike in fewer hours or take more time. The trail is through the forested areas, lava flows and the open space. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful views of the boiling lava with red glow from the crusted lava and can have pictorial moments.

Day 3: Transfer to Kahuzi-biege park  

Today morning you start to descend back, your driver guide will be waiting to transfer you to start your drive to Bukavu in the South. The journey is not long but parts of the road are not good, you have an opportunity to see more of Congo as you drive past villages.

Day 4: Lowland Gorilla trekking

The driver guide will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you to the park headquarters for briefing before you can start the lowland gorilla trek. The experience takes anything from one hour to several before locating them depending on where they nested. Once you locate them, you have 1 hour in their presence before you leave their presence.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali

Today after an early breakfast at hotel, your driver guide will transfer you to Kigali. You will have short stops for stretching and lunch until you arrive in Kigali.
