3 Days Nyiragongo Volcano Hike

This 3 Days Congo Nyiragongo hike safari will give you an opportunity to experience the amazing active volcano and the different sceneries of Congo.  The Nyiragongo volcano is part of the 8 Virunga Volcanoes which are scattered in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.  It is an active volcano that last erupted in 2002 leaving several people dead including animals and property destroyed. Amidst all this damage, Nyiragongo is a beauty to behold after hiking up the volcano to have views of the same in the night when darkness covers the area.

Day 1: Arrival to Kigali and Transfer to Gisenyi

Day 2: Transfer to Nyiragongo Volcano

Day 3: Descend from Nyiragongo and transfer to Kigali.

Day 1: Arrival to Kigali and Transfer to Gisenyi

This tour will start with pick up from Kigali International Airport or your Kigali hotel by a Kagera safari representative.  You will set off from Kigali to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu for overnight. On arrival at the lodge you will check in and take your well-deserved rest in preparation for the hiking.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyiragongo Volcano

On this day you start your journey to Nyiragongo volcano hike. In the morning by 7:00  am you will be at the Grande Barriere border crossing where you check in with Virunga tourism office by 8:00am of the scheduled trek. The tourism office is located at the Grande Barriere border post building just opposite passport control. During check in you will be provided with a volcano trek permit and transfer to  the starting point of the hike.

On arrival at Kibata ranger post, you will start the hike up Nyiragongo at around 10:00am. The hike takes about 6 hours depending on your speed and fitness. You may hike in fewer hours or take more time. The trail is through the forested areas, lava flows and the open space. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful views of the boiling lava with red glow from the crusted lava and can have pictorial moments.

You will spend the night at the crater.

Day 3: Descend from Nyiragongo and transfer to Kigali.

Today morning you start to descend back and be transferred back to Grande Barriere. Your driver will pick you up and you transfer back to Kigali.
