Day 1: Visit UWEC – birding in Mabamba bay

The safari begins with a guide picking you from Entebbe airport or your residence in Kampala. You will visit UWEC – Uganda Wildlife Education Center, commonly referred to as Entebbe zoo for a prime encounter with Uganda’s wildlife. The next adventure will be a birding excursion in Mabamba bay – a habitat to over 260 bird species.

Day 2: Travel to Lake Bunyonyi – embark on a guided nature walk

Your next destination will be Lake Bunyonyi – ‘the place of many little birds’ found in south-western Uganda. You will make a brief stop at equator, to take photos at the monuments, do a water experiment and visit the curio shops in the area. Once you arrive at the lake, you will embark on a guided nature walk before retiring to your lodging.

Day 3: Boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi – encounter the pygmy Batwa

The day’s adventure will include a boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi, visiting the 29 islands spread across the lake, and a community tour to encounter the native Batwa – a tribe of pygmy people who inhabit part of the Orugano rain forest.

Day 4: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your guide will transfer you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Once you arrive at the park, you will take out some time to relax and unwind before embarking on a guided nature walk. You can also go cycling in Buhoma region.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking excursion – Batwa trail experience

The day will begin with a gorilla trekking excursion in one of the park’s major regions. After a briefing from park authorities, you will hit one of the trailheads and begin your quest for a habituated gorilla family. After spending an hour observing the family and its members, you will have a lunch break and then embark on a Batwa cultural experience. You will encounter the Batwa – a tribe of pygmy forest dwellers.

Day 6: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park – embark on a guided nature walk in the park

In the early morning, you will embark on a drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Once you arrive at the park, you will set out on a guided nature walk in; Mweya peninsula, the shady Maramagambo forest or along the banks of Ishasha river. While in Maramagambo forest, you will have a chance to explore the famous Bat cave.

Day 7: Morning game drive – boat cruise on Kazinga channel

You will begin the day with a classic game drive through any of the park’s main tracks; Kasenyi, the north Kazinga plains and the fascinating Ishasha sector. Guaranteed wildlife sightings include; buffaloes, antelopes, elephants, warthogs, baboons, and the tree-climbing lions found in Ishasha. In the afternoon, you will go for a boat cruise on Kazinga channel. While at it, you will sight pods of hippos and crocodiles basking at the water banks. Over 60 bird species can be spotted while sailing on the channel.

Day 8: Transfer to Kibale National Park – guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland sanctuary

You will embark on a transfer to Kibale National Park in the early morning. When you arrive at the park, you will go for a guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. The wetland is a home to many wildlife and bird species.

Day 9: Chimpanzee trekking excursion – guided birding excursion

You will begin the day with a chimpanzee trekking excursion. After a briefing from park authorities, your adventure will begin. The trek lasts between 2-6 hours before you can encounter a habituated chimp family. Once you encounter one, you will spend an hour observing its members. Later in the afternoon, you will go for a guided birding excursion along the boardwalk trail and the various viewing platforms in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. The area has over 138 bird species.

Day 10: Return to Kampala – visit the crater lakes region en-route

As you embark on your drive back to Kampala, you will visit the crater lakes region – the location of 10 lakes formed as a result of volcanic explosions. When you reach Fort Portal, you will visit the famous ‘Amabere ga nyina mwiru’ caves and the Karambi royal tombs. You will reach Kampala in the late evening. This will mark the end of your safari.
